Section 3 Assessment

Today in class, we answered questions on the section 2 assessment pages:

1.
Direct Democracy- A form of government in which the citizEns rule directly and not through representatives
Classical Art- Values of harmony, order, balance, and proportion
Tragedy- A serious drama about common themes such as love, hate, war, or betrayal
Comedy- Scenes filled with slapstick situations and crude humor
Peloponnesian War- War in 431 B.C. with Sparta and Athens
Philosopher- Thinkers who were determined to seek the truth, no matter where the search led them
Socrates- One critic of the sophists that believed that absolute standards did exist for truth and justice
Plato- A student of socrates who wrote down the conversations of socrates
Aristotle- A philosopher who questioned the nature of the world and of human belief, thought, and knowledge
2.
In my opinion, Pericles goal to strengthen democracy had the greatest impact on the modern world because it gives the world today an outline of what our world should and should not look like. From history we can look back at everything that happened with this government and how it worked out.
3.
To strengthen democracy in Athens, Pericles increased the number of public officials who were paid salaries. Now the poorest citizens could serve if picked. This caused more Athens to be engaged in the government. Then, Pericles introduced a direct democracy where people could voice their opinions.
5.
Some Athens felt as if socrates teaching were disturbing because he was teaching differently than anyone else. People weren't used to these types of teachings.

Test day!

Today in class, we took our part 1 Ancient Greece test and I feel like I dint do too bad. I studies for an ample amount of time and used a Quizlet. Some questions had me feeling a bit under confident because they were the small detailed notes I took and I didn't pay attention to them as much as I should've but an overall rating of the test would be that it wasn't too hard. I felt like I was comfortable with most of the test material and questions. Now, tomorrow we will be taking more notes on our part 2 of the Ancient Greek unit. I think liked human geography better because it was a bit more interactive but this semester isn't too bad.

Test Thursday

Today in class, we took a few more slides worth of notes. We talked about a direct democracy which is a government ruled by only the people/community. America is a democracy but not a direct democracy. We don't entirely choose our leaders, rather the other people have a say also. The ancient greeks picked who they wanted. It was almost like a convention in which the people got up in front of everyone and gave out their ideas and the people voiced their opinions. You didn't have to agree with everything, you could also disagree and voice the opposite opinion. Then the government became more harsh when the persons brother was murdered. He tried to find who murdered him and when they found even someone a little suspicious he killed them and their family.

Homer and His Stories

Today in class, we talked about how we are going to have a test Thursday. The test will be on ancient Greece. I need to do well on this test as can be told by my grade in the class. If I can do good, then I can bring my grade up to a more reachable A. I need to study the places on the map like Crete and the seas like the Ionian Sea and the Adriatic Sea as we'll need to identify the different places on the map. Then, we took even more notes on the subject. We took notes on things like Homer and how people speculate whether he was real or not. I believe that Homer was real and that he was an actual blind man that went to different communities and told epics like The Odyssey and The Iliad.

Pop quiz

Today in class, we took a pop quiz and I didn't do too well. I made a 70% on the quiz and now I have a 79.51 in the class which means I am .1 away from having a C. I'm trying my best to bring up my grades but its not working out too well. Now I'm even more stressed with school so now I need to focus on tests and doing all my work. When we take this test I need to do very well so I can make a good grade and bring it up for the quarter. Mid-quarters are next Thursday so I still have time to bring up my grade but I am still very stressed and trying my best. For the rest of class, we took notes on democracy and Greece's golden age. It's all about democratic principles and classical culture flourished during Greece's golden age. It's not very entertaining but hopefully I can be interested enough to bring my grade up.

The Mycaneaens

Today in class, we took more notes on the culture go the mountains and the sea. We talked a lot about the odyssey and the other stories of Homer even though there is questions about if he is a real person. We also took notes on what the greeks diet consisted of which was grains, grapes, olives, and fish. Also their temperatures ranged from 40 degrees in the winter and 80 degrees in the summer. The Mycaneaens had a 20 foot thick wall that protected them and made sure that they were safe. Then in around 1200 B.C., mysterious "sea people" were showing up and invaded the Mycaneaen and burnt the palaces once by one. People still don't know who the people were or why they did what they did.

Philosophy

Today in class, we talked more about philosophy and Platos story. I have a better understanding now of the story and what it really meant. now I feel like I can understand and contribute to the discussion during class. Philosophy is weird because it's like writing about thinking about thinking about thinking and so on. Philosophy is a weird subject and is veery odd to even think about. Platos story was about how when you're told one thing your whole life, you don't know anything different so when you go into the real world, you are surprised and don't know how to act. You are scared and maddened about the people who taught you wrong.

Plato and his Story

Today in class, we started out the period talking about our Egypt quizzes and then we read a story of plato and his cave. Not many people did good on the quiz so Mr. Schick is gonna let some people re-take it. Since the quiz didn't have many questions, if you got even one wrong you would have a low A so with me getting 5 wrong it meant that I would get a low grade. Next, we learned about Platos cave. The story was a bit confusing as it had a lot of different parts and just a confusing storyline. The story had a bigger meaning than what was being told throughout the story. We had to infer what was happening in the story and find the truer meaning of the text. The truer meaning of the text was more about how if you do something different than the rest of the people than you'll get ridiculed even if it may be the better choice of what to do. The story was about people in a cave that were shackled against a wall and then a thing was projected against the wall that taught them about their life. Once they were freed, they didn't know how to act because the light was too bright and they needed to adjust how they viewed life.

No Mr. Schick

Today in class, Mr Schick was not here. We read through the pages of 127-133 and took notes on the topic. Something new I learned is that some governments are run by the community/the people which is called a democracy. I don't really know any examples of places with a democracy government but it seems not too popular anyway. I don't like western civilization as much because I feel like it's less interactive than human geography was. this semester is different because we do a lot more book work and notes rather than watch videos and such like last semester. Also I didn't do too good on the quiz we took but I also heard that not many others did too good on it either so I don't feel so bad about myself.

Cultures of the Mountains and Sea

Today in class, we answered questions about the Cultures of the Mountains and Sea.
1.
Mycenaen- People who settled on the greek mainland around 2000 B.C.
Trojan War- 10 year war against Mycanaen and Troy
Dorian- People who spoke of greek and may have been distant relatives of Bronze Age people
Homer- A blind storytelling man telling about epics
Epic- A poem celebrating good deeds of a hero
Myth- Traditional stories about the Gods
3.
Being near to the sea had its impacts on ancient Egypt. The Aegean, Ionian, and the Black Sea were important transportation routes for the greek people. Also, having the sea helped with trade which was important since Greece lacked supplies.
4.
Being in contact with the Minoans had its benifits. Mycanaeans saw the value of seaborne trade. they also adopted the writing system to Greek language. they influenced the Mycanaeans by forming religious practices, art, politics, and literature.
5.
Epics were important to the Greeks of the Dorian period. The myths and epics helped the greeks understand the mysteries of nature and power of human passions. For example, myths explained the changing of the seasons.

Quiz day

Today Ibn class, we took our 75 point quiz on Egypt. I felt pretty comfortable with the questions and all the topics that were on it. the only thing I didn't feel comfortable about was the last fill in the blank question which now I know the answer is ma'at but of course I didn't know that answer a few minutes ago. Hopefully, I did good on the quiz because it could definitely boost my grade up higher than it already is and then my gpa will be in a nice spot. I need to study for my biology and math tests that ill be having next week to make sure I can keep a good grade in those classes. I met early this morning for math to go over the topic and now I understand it a lot better. I also need to bring that grade up as it is low since I didn't understand the topic really.

QUIZ tomorrow

Today in class, we talked about out quiz we have tomorrow. We talked about how many questions are on the quiz and what some of the questions might be tomorrow. Tonight I'm going to look over my notes and hopefully get a good grade tomorrow because I need to keep an A in this class because I usually have a plummeting grade in this class. Then, we listened to a song that they sang which sounded really weird and fast. It was very exotic and I've never heard something like that. Im praying to do good on my quiz so I can have at least a 4.0 this quarter or even higher than that which would be very nice. Also, I have Mamma Mia rehearsal after school eat 4 so I have that and then I have to study for this and figure out how to do biology.

Pyramids and Temples

Today in class, we took more notes on Egypt and its life. We talked about the temples and the pyramids that were made out of stone and covered in marble, but then later stripped off during the muslim conquest. We also talked about how the temple of Amon at Karnak is the largest religious building in the world, also made out of huge blocks of stone. Stone sculptures were inside to depict the humans and the gods which was very effective. We also talked about how they believe in an afterlife which we though was weird what they did when they died. taking out the organs was not something we would do today.

Letter to my Future Self
