Section 3 Assessment

Today in class, we answered questions on the section 2 assessment pages:

1.
Direct Democracy- A form of government in which the citizEns rule directly and not through representatives
Classical Art- Values of harmony, order, balance, and proportion
Tragedy- A serious drama about common themes such as love, hate, war, or betrayal
Comedy- Scenes filled with slapstick situations and crude humor
Peloponnesian War- War in 431 B.C. with Sparta and Athens
Philosopher- Thinkers who were determined to seek the truth, no matter where the search led them
Socrates- One critic of the sophists that believed that absolute standards did exist for truth and justice
Plato- A student of socrates who wrote down the conversations of socrates
Aristotle- A philosopher who questioned the nature of the world and of human belief, thought, and knowledge
2.
In my opinion, Pericles goal to strengthen democracy had the greatest impact on the modern world because it gives the world today an outline of what our world should and should not look like. From history we can look back at everything that happened with this government and how it worked out.
3.
To strengthen democracy in Athens, Pericles increased the number of public officials who were paid salaries. Now the poorest citizens could serve if picked. This caused more Athens to be engaged in the government. Then, Pericles introduced a direct democracy where people could voice their opinions.
5.
Some Athens felt as if socrates teaching were disturbing because he was teaching differently than anyone else. People weren't used to these types of teachings.
