- as Rome grew, the gap between the rich and poor also grew

- in 60 B.C., a military leader named Julius Caesar joined forces with Crassus and Pompey

- for the next ten years, they dominated Rome as a triumvirate
- became governor of gaul

- Pompey became Ceaser's rival
- became dictator for life
- after his death, war broke out again
- after the war, a period of time called the Pax Romana came along meaning "Roman Peace"
- A period of peace and prosperity
- agriculture was the most important industry in the empire
- slavery was a huge part of Rome
- Octavian became the ruler of Rome
- soon accepted the title, Augustus
